ABOUT THE BOOK:

What started out of desperation–WPVI was near last in the ratings–became inspiration for a news format that would forever change the landscape of local news across the country. From its debut in 1970, Action News set the standard that other stations around the country would emulate. It quickly became the number one newscast in the Philadelphia television market and has held that position ever since. This is a look back at how the legacy began, and how it evolved. This book goes behind the scenes with WPVI’s beloved newscasters, sportscasters, weather reporters; it looks at the creation of the famous theme song and the unconventional promos over the years; it recalls the most hilarious segments; it reveals the tragedies both on and off-air; it remembers the storms and the real-life camaraderie that viewers have come to love. And it takes the reader into the heart of the news station with the show’s groundbreaking producers, editors, and management.

Additionally, this book shares the basic ideologies that have remained the same since the early 1970s, and the secrets of why WPVI is so extraordinary, and why it’s had a special place in the hearts of Philadelphia area residents for so many years.
